PAPER MATE, LIQUID PAPER (illustrator: Julius Ohta)

Paper Mate Liquid Paper has teamed up with Sao Paulo’s advertising agency Giovanni+Draftfcb to launch this funny & clever campaign, in which the illustrative execution is the perfect fit for this "write / erase" creative idea.

In cartoon images looking like comic books, the ad features characters who are involved in an awkward conversation. They say things they should not have said. Luckily for them, thanks to Paper Mate Liquid Paper, they can take them back. The (playful or dirty) imagination of the audience is let to guess what the original sentence was.

Well deserved Silver Award (Outdoor) at Cannes Lions 2012.

Julius Ohta is Brazilian/Japanese illustrator with a background in graphic design. His illustration merges a wide range of techniques in order to provide the best image solutions. Julius's clients include Young & Rubicam, Leo Burnett, Publicis, GiovaniDraftFCB, Wunderman, Penguin Books.

JOHNNIE WALKER "1910 Edition" (illustrator: Chris Martin)

The Johnnie Walker 1910 Commemorative Special Edition Bottle range has been awarded a Yellow Pencil for packaging design at the 2012 D&AD Awards.
1000 bottles were produced to mark the launch of the Johnnie Walker House in Shanghai. 1910 marks the year that Johnnie Walker was first enjoyed in China.
The design, developed by creative agency LOVE and designed by Chris Martin, tells the story of Johnnie Walker’s epic journey from Scotland to China. Each bottle features a different section of the illustration, which has been applied in China’s traditional blue and white willow pattern colours.
This was the first time Diageo was presenting a Johnnie Walker blend in only one location in the world.

GRAND MARNIER, "La Vie Grand Marnier" (Illustrator: Jordi Labanda)

North America campaign (2009 to 2012):

Animated version:

Adaptation for Asia:

Grand Marnier is one of the most authentic and storied spirits brands. Created over 150 years ago by Alexandre Marnier-Lapostolle, the French liqueur's famous blend of true cognacs and distilled essence of bitter orange had earned the brand broad awareness and distribution throughout the globe.
The brand needed an exciting, refreshed image that would attract a younger consumer, without alienating the existing user base. The opportunity was to recapture Grand Marnier's authentic French equity, but with a youthful, modern, exciting style.
Produced together with illustrator Jordi Labanda, La Vie Grand Marnier pays tribute to vintage French posters while emerging you into a vibrant party in Paris, filled with delicious cocktails, "Joie de Vivre" and fireworks by the Eiffel Tower.

GUERLAIN, La Petite Robe Noire (Illustrators: Olivier Kuntzel+Florence Deygas)

2013 poster & animated campaign "A Party in Paris" :

2012 poster & animated ad campaign:

The making of:

After a reworking of fragrance La Petite Robe Noire, Guerlain has teamed up with French artists Olivier Kuntzel and Florence Deygas for an animated advertising campaign bringing the classic little black dress to life.
Their animated campaign hit TV and cinema screens internationally in the second half of 2012.

Contrasting to the trend for perfume campaigns starring big name celebrities à la J'adore by Christian Dior starring Charlize Theron, Guerlain has opted for something different with the animated route, in a charming and lively sketchy style.

The animated ad version was awarded 'favorite TV ad' in France for the year 2012, according to Ipsos Advertising Research Institute (26th Ipsos annual advertising ranking, April 2013).

Kuntzel and Deygas are celebrated for their graphic creations, having previously teamed up with brands including Comme des Garçons and Diptyque.

René GRUAU (4 February 1909 - 31 March 2004)

Rouge Baiser, 1948

Le bas Scandale, 1950

Dubonnet, 1950

Les Bas Christian Dior, 1952

Cinzano, 1953

Miss Dior, 1959

Dior, 1960

Ortalion, 1967

Eau Sauvage, 1978

Gruau's artistic talent in fashion illustration merited him publication at the age of 14 and by the time he reached 18, he was published internationally, in the US, Italy, and France. In his lifetime, Gruau worked for numerous magazines including Marie-Claire, Femina, Elle, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, Flair, L'Officiel, and Madame Figaro, and L'Officiel de la Couture.

Gruau was hired by major designers like Pierre Balmain, Christian Dior, Jacques Fath, Balenciaga, Elsa Schiaparelli, Rochas, Lanvin, Elizabeth Arden, and Hubert de Givenchy. Gruau gave life to their haute couture clothing and expanded their popularity with his captivating illustrations.

Gruau, whose posters often echoed both classical Japanese drawings and Toulouse-Lautrec's sketches of fin de siècle Paris night life, was even best known for creating the marketing images for Miss Dior perfume and for Rouge Baiser lipstick. According to Alan Riding of the New York Times, "everything he did, he evoked the glamour and style of the world of high fashion".

Gruau's pictures were the advertisements of the time and gave marketing and presentation of clothing a new brilliant flare.
Gruau's first position as artistic director for advertising was in 1947 with Christian Dior. The two together formed the "New Look" of the time, partially a result of Dior's designs, and partially a result of Gruau's combined interpretation and upgrading of old-style graphic illustration. Gruau formed a friendship with Dior that contributed to their successful collaboration and further enlargement of fashion advertisement, which a primary reason he is mostly remembered for his work with Dior.
Gruau moved to the United States in 1948 to work for Vogue and Harper's Bazaar.

DEEZER, "Nothing will stop the music" (Illustrator: Mc Bess)

All of the work makes the connection to Deezer brand’s five-colour mark in contrast to the signature black and white style of McBess.
"The overall effect is dark, dynamic and a little risqué – like an old-fashioned Betty Boop cartoon with a rock'n roll vibe – which suits the Deezer brand perfectly" says McBess.

Mcbess (Matthieu Bessudo), born July 5, 1984, is a French illustrator living in London. His style is a mix of influences such as Fleischer Studios' old cartoons he actualizes by using contemporary shapes, symbols, and types. Mcbess's drawings often present himself at the center of a surrealist world filled with food and musical references, such as amps, guitars and records. Mcbess is also a musician in the band "The Dead Pirates."
